Rejuvenating a downtown has many challenges and obstacles to overcome. Coupling this task with the fact that overhead distribution will also need to be converted to an underground system adds to the depth and complexity of the task at hand.
An Ontario distribution company was recently faced with this very task. Replacement of three (3) overhead feeders to underground distribution for a multi block section of their downtown core seemed like a daunting task. Cost, space, reliability and deadlines were all topics that needed to be addressed.
After a review of their switchgear requirements, Canada Power Products was determined to be the switchgear supplier of choice. Compact size, past performance/reliability and the ability to customize switchgear for their specific application made the decision easy.
The focal point of this conversion came down to one specific vault that had all three (3) 15kV feeders. For reliability and system flexibility the utility decided to use three (3) separate switchgears and incorporate ties so any two feeders could be tied together. When taking all this into account, as well as the required loads that they had to feed, it was determined that 5-way switchgears would be the configuration required to meet their needs.
Working with an existing vault meant space would be a concern. Seeing that the Canada Power Products SF6 switchgear is compact and can be mounted in any orientation the utility decided to mount the switches vertically instead of the conventional horizontal mounting.

The utility was able to complete the project on time and meet all their obligations to their customers. With the use of the 5-way VTNI style switchgear the utility was able to incorporate load break switching for feeders and ties as well as electronic fuse protection (Fault Interrupters) for transformer protection.
