Communication is the key component to successful implementation of distribution automation. Commonly used protocol such as DNP or Modbus is used for remote operation of switch/recloser/fault interrupter or a more complex loop feeder arrangement for fault detection, isolation and circuit restoration. For a more elaborate approach, it can also be tied back to master SCADA for system re-configuration, load management and load flow analysis.
